I want to get into cycling and am having trouble deciding between these road bikes. Which one do you think is best?

http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=5751045

Also are there other bikes I should consider in a similar price range to those above? (I don’t want to spend too much money on a new bike).

I used to be an avid cyclist, but that was 20 years ago. Now I’ve got osteoarthritis in one of my feet, and my doctor says I need to switch to low impact exercise. I figure it’s time to get back into cycling again. I don’t want to break the bank on this so I want to know what is the best complete road bicycle that I can get into for under $1000. The face of cycling has changed drastically since I stopped riding. I’m hoping for a bicycle under 17lbs. with all components in place…but I’m also not a small man at 240 pounds, so it needs to be sturdy and have a smooth and comfortable ride.

I just bought a new road bike a month ago, and every day passes iam getting more attracted to biking. Is there any training course i need to take? if there is, is it useful or it’s just waste of time ? Or, maybe you could recommend me a book about cycling.

Cycling Versus Driving - An Action Research

I am conducting an action research on the feasibility of cycling in parallel to someone else’s driving pattern. The aim of this study is to discover the potential hurdles a person would tackle, when one opts to carry out his daily commute by cycling instead of driving. Seriously, please answer the following questions in as much details as possible.

Demographic

1.Gender? Male / Female

Research Question

(I) Traveling Patterns

1.How far do you drive on a daily basis? Including all errands.
2.What type of route do you usually be keen on? Freeways, highways, local roads, et cetera.
3.What is the farthest trip you have driven by yourself? From where to where?
4.Do you think that I would be able to keep up with you while you drive? Based on your normal driving speed.

(II) Driving Styles

1.Is your vehicle equipped with a manual (stick shift) or automatic transmission?
2.What is your usual acceleration style? For example, do you typically keep a feathery or heavy foot on the gas pedal?

I have been doing MTB for several years and may start road also. What’s a good starter or mid-range bike? I don’t want a mass produced road bike but less mainstream with a good reputation. I’m willing to spend $800-$1500 tops.

I enjoy doing sprint triathlons, but only do two a year. I like to Mountain Bike more than I cycle. Instead of buying a road bike, can you give me some tips (hopefully cheap tips) on how to convert my biek for the road. I just put road tires on my bike and feel a huge difference.

Is there a better option than Aero bars?

I’m planning a trip with my friend to ride from California’s Central Coast to Tuscon, through the Mojave desert on our road bikes. (The bikes with the skinny tires, to all who don’t know what a road bike is.)

I was looking for advice on cycling in the desert, because I haven’t found any online.

1. Lots of water-
This is a given. If you suggest this you’ll probably just annoy me unless you have practical “water-carrying” advice or something.

I was thinking about riding evenings and mornings and skipping the major heat of the day. Even at night, with lights on the bikes?

I dunno. I’m asking for your advice.
Thanks M R, I apprecieate the informativeness of your answer. (Which is something Yahoo! Answers often lacks.)
I am planning to ride this next fall/winter.
I grew up there, so I also know (and lots of people are shocked) to find the desert actually can get REALLY cold.
“Major Tom,” I lived in the desert for 7 years. I did plenty of backpacking.
Yes, I am well aware of how dark it gets. Believe it or not, we live in an age where we can put lights on bicycles.

And I’ve already got a rack I use for school on my bike, just not panniers.

I’ve lived in Holland where you can find a good/safe cycling path on the side of most major roads and there is no need to own a car.
I am easily in shape to go 12 miles to work and 12 miles back without breaking a sweat…or up to 70 in a day so shape is not the limiting factor keeping me in a car in Houston (where the path setup along major roads, aside from Braeswood Bayou, is a death wish for cyclists).

Are there any cities in the US which in any way approach Holland’s level of seriousness/convenience for cycling?

I live in Eugene and bought myself a road bike with a carbon fiber fork. I noticed unlike a mountain bike, the bike is much more susceptible to breakage. I had one concern dealing with my daily commute, there are no smoothly paved roads in Eugene. Flat tires will happen all the time due to the terrible condition of the bike lanes but the stress that my fork endures on the ride seems extremely crushing.
How long can the fork take it?

Hi guys and girls, im looking at starting cycling but i am very unsure about what to get? there is so much out there so many brands so much to look for im just getting confused and it sucks!!

I want the bike to ride 15km to work and 15 back, casual riding maybe 50 - 100 km on weekend..

I also would like to complete a few triathlons in summer!!

I found a bike for $1,151usd Its a Specialized Transition Triathlon/Road Bike 2005 model, its second hand but in really good condition..

This is the bike “http://www.bikepedia.com/QuickBike/BikeSpecs.aspx?Year=2005&Brand=Specialized&Model=Transition+Elite&Type=bike”

Do you think that could be a good option or would u suggest buying a bike brand new for 1300usd?

If you think a new bike would be better could u please suggest a website i could look at purchasing preferably in Australia if not somewhere that ships to australia.

Thanks Matt

It seems like there’s a lot of disparity from one brand’s shoe to the next, whether the shoes are made for road biking or mountain biking. Some mountain biking shoes seem more comfortable for everyday use or for walking. What’s the downside in getting mountain biking shoes for a road bike?

How many miles would you give your blocks and chain before going to replace them? I’ve had my Falcon tourmalet road bike for about five years now and have clocked up I’d say just over a thousand miles. I take pretty good care of it, clean out the bearings, chain, blocks etc once a year. Gear shifts are still perfect, but there’s visible wear on the blocks and the chain doesn’t move as perfectly as it should when you take it off, it’s also a little loose, like you can twist it.

I starting running not too long ago for some much needed exercise. Yet i noticed after a few months my knees started to hurt all the time. So now I’m thinking about getting a bike for exercise. anyone have some insight.

first, Will i get as much exercise from cycling as i would form running?
also, i have a few bikes in mind, can anyone give me some good advice about which might be best.

Looking at a comfort/hybrid bike. like the
Trek 7100 / 7200

http://www.trekbikes.com/us/en/bikes/2008/bike_path/

or a road bike

I’m not really sure which might be best for me.
I do get some lower back pain, So i’m leaning a little more toward the hybrid bike ( i don’t know how leaning over on a road bike might be for me.)

Thanks for any advice.

Looking to spend 5-7 days on either Puerto Rico, Jamaica, Guadeloupe, Aruba or Antigua. Would like to spend part of that time cycling, either around the island or from a home base. I don’t hear much about cycling in this part of the world. Any suggestions/experiences? Open to other islands, but not to a “all-downhill” or super touristy experience. Prefer road to mountain biking. Would also appreciate any ideas on bike rentals.

I just bought a Reebok stationary bike and I want to put my click in pedals on the bike so I can wear my cycling shoes when I work out on it. (The pedals on the stationary bike are really crappy)

However, the pedal threads on the stationary bike are smaller than those for my road bike. My road bike pedals wont fit into my stationary bike because the threads are too big.

Is there anything I can do? The arms that the pedals screw into (not sure what they are called) do not come off the stationary bike so I can’t replace them with ones with larger thread holes.

Please Help.

I have been trying to get into cycling and am actively looking for a road bike. Since I am entry level I would like to not spend an arm and leg for a bike, yet at the same time get a bike that would not hold me back. I have done some research and found this one bike and with the following components:
Shimano 105 Rear derailleur
Alex AT400 Rims
Specialized Mondo Tires
Shimano Tiagra Flight Deck
Carbon Fiber Seatpost
Specialized Saddle
Carbon Fact Fork
Sugino Cranks
Triple Chainring
Sigma 1606L computer

First question, can you tell how gears the bike has from this? Also how are the components on this bike, anything I should be worried about?

-Would underarmour work instead of buying expensive “official” shirts?
-Giro helmet for $40 worth it?
-How to get cheap sunglasses that look good for under $20?
-Orbea a good brand for first race/cross country bike?
-What style would a long distance/race bike be considered? (road, racing, tour, audax)
-How much does a cycling cost? Do I have to renew it? How much is that?

Thanks for everything. :)
The last question is a “cycling license”. And what I mean by “what style of bike” is what would a long distance/race bike be considered. I only get $150 every two weeks and want this bike to count. I want to be able to do MORE long distance with friends but also be able to do a FEW races with it. Sorry about that.

I ride my mountain bike about 10 miles every day on the streets around my house and typically average 15-16 miles per hour. I know that the tires add a lot of drag, so I was wondering what my speed would be on a road bike that had less drag. I am thinking of getting a nice road bike, but I am not concerned with aero-bars or other drag reducing gear.

Just bought a nice starter road bike. Trying to save money on gas. So I take out to the gym and back, and riding in the bike line is horribly scary! Don’t get me wrong, I love the feeling of the wind, and the speed. But I feel like I’m gonna fall off and get ran over. Is this normal? Were you afraid when you started cycling? It’s really not like riding a BMX, or a mountain bike. At least to me.

I want a bike that I can actually use for transportation. My road bike is very light and 3-4 mph faster, but my mountain bike already has flat handlebars, sturdier, and has disk brakes. …but converting the mountain bike makes it worthless in the dirt since switching out rims is not easy with my bike (Cannondale Lefty Fork).
Additionally, I would like to keep the mountain bike ready for daily dirt riding w/o switching out tires constantly.

I am looking at purchasing a road bike for triathlons, and one bike I am looking at has a 650cc wheel on the front and a normal 700cc wheel on the rear. The bike shop claims that this bike would be faster than a bike with normal 700cc wheels. I am only 5′2″ and have heard that this set up is best for shorter riders. Is this set-up actually faster?

In late March I purchased my first real bike. A Trek MTB. I love it! Its great on trails and stuff. I had no idea I would want to ride on the road so much though. I almost feel discouraged every time I think about cycling because riding a mtb on the road feels really weird to me, kindof uncomfortable and out of place. I’d like to ride much longer distances, but don’t want to on a mountain bike. Every time I see a cyclist I really want to get a road bike too, it would be soo motivating.
SO right now I can’t afford the Trek 2.1 I am saving for (I am a low income, lol, 15 year old by the way). Should I buy a used junker road bike for like $50 or save for like 6-8 months for the $1260 + I need to buy the road bike? If I bought a used crapper than I could have it right away yet still save for the Trek 2.1 I am not willing to change out the tired on my mtb to road tires, I do like riding it on the trails. Please tell me what I should do! Thanks SO much and God bless!
Sorry, I’m not willing to do that. That would mean again saving for tires and all that jazz. AND ALSO- if I were to go to a pawn shop or whatever- where do I find these? I don’t know where to search, even after scouting google.

It has carbon forks/chainstays. Tiagra components. Alluminum frame that is real rigid. It has a cateye cycling computer with cadence and also clipless road pedals - Shimano 105 spd. I am moving and can’t take it with.It rides smooth and quiet. SHifts crisp and clean too.scratches are real small and barely noticeable-There isn’t many.
I am in Pensacola FL but I could ship it too. Its brandnew at least $1100 but will sell it for $595

I would like to buy a new road racing bike, should I invest in a good (expensive) wheelset although this would mean that I will have to spend less on other parts (besides the frame).
Is there a different, beside weight, between a normal price wheelset and an expensive one. I noticed that some expensive wheelsets are only around 200g lighter.Besides speed and weight, the quality of ride is also important to me.

Before the holidays I ran 15 miles a week (3 miles, 5 days a week). I had to stop during the holidays because my family lives on a busy road with no shoulders. It’s been about a month and all I’ve been doing is cycling 5 miles a day on my family’s ancient stationary bike. How do I get back into running without hurting myself?

Is the flight deck a really good computer for high end road
bikes?
Is it truly wireless or are there still wires required?
Are there any other bicycle computers you recommend over
this one? This also shows the gear you’re in and integrates to
Dura-Ace (even Ultegra)

Is Sidi Genius 6.6 cycling shoe worth the really large price tag?
Do they run large or small?

Thanks cycling enthusiasts …

I just bought my first road bike, do you need to have the padded shorts or do people eventually get used to the seat. It is really limiting my rides, I can only go about ten miles before I have to get off.

I’ve got a mild form of cerebral palsy and have difficulty forcing my feet to remain flat as I cycle bike pedals. What is the most effective setup I could utilize to ensure a STRONG and otherwise permanent (i.e not loosening without my help) foot grip on road pedals?

Are clips/cleats really the best way to go? I don’t think I’d feel as secure with just a strap, either.

Thanks

I am a regular mountain biker, but like to road-ride, too. However, my full-suspension is way too much drama for the pavement and even my hardtail is too heavy for efficient road travel. I want something lighter and better suited. The problem is, I am not super fond of the “feel” of road bikes. I saw that Trek (my fave) had “fitness” bikes and “urban” bikes and I am wondering if anyone can tell me what are the advantages/disadvantages to choosing a fitness or urban bike over a road bike?

THANKS! :) Just to add, a fitness bike is not a stationary bike. It is an actual style of bicycle like urban, road, mountain, triathalon, etc. I was just hoping that someone had some info on what might be better suited for me. Thanks to anyone who can help!

Im training for my first triatholon and am looking for a good road bike for the riding portion. I have been training on a stationary bike at the gym and am needing to get some miles done on a road bike. Ive looked at some local, Houston Tx, bike shops and the prices are well over what I want to spend on a bike. Any suggestions on brands and dealers would be great.

I am looking to get a used road bike. What is a good price range for an older road bike that is in good shape, in general? There is a bike shop selling “vintage road bikes in working condition” sale tomorrow, and I just want to know what would be a general price range so I don’t waste money if the bikes are over priced.

I just bought my first road racer. After years of riding mountain bikes and just hanging them upside down (by the wheels) from the ceiling (with no apparent bad effect), I was wondering if there is any reason I shouldn’t do this with my racing bike. It has Mavic open pro rims, a steel frame, and the whole thing weighs about 18lbs.

Will I do any damage to the bike by storing it in the same manner as my mountain bikes?

When you are sprinting down perfect road (which is rare since there are pebbles and debris all over the roads where I live, and I got another nasty scrape on my rear tire today) my tires on my bike make this sound in unison with the power applied to my pedals. So it basically sounds like the tires are burning softly into the ground with every revolution of the pedal. I cant describe the sound. The best way I can describe it (although it might be vague still) is that it sounds like how your muscles contract when you are weight lifting and doing high reps. You almost hear the blood flowing through your muscles as you force out reps.

The sound from my tires isnt continuous. Rather you hear it with every revolution in segments. Maybe its a sign that I’m not applying power more fluidly on my pedals. But I can hear the power being applied and then going to the ground through my tires. It sounds like….”Whishhhh, Whissshhhh, Whiissshhhh, Whiissshhhh,” really fast. The only time I heard a distinct sound coming from another riders bike was when someone was right behind me and speeding up, I heard what sounded like his wheels spinning and whirling (and I thought that was really cool). Can you explain this sound? This is one of the best sounds while cycling, atleast for me. Cant really hear much from other riders unless they are right behind me or going by me really fast.

I was spinning thismorning for 90 mins at race pace in a spinning class. stong uphills, fast downhills. Could I have got them easily or was the length too much on a spinning bike ? or was I cycling with my feet in the wrong possition ?

NOTE: I do cycle 100km’s in under 3 hours, so I am used to the road distance
